Pempton. Phillip was an only child; however, he was raised together with Rochell Sims (who preceded him in death) whom he referred to as his sister. He is also preceded in death by his grandmother, Ola Barnes Lemley, aunt, Juanita Barry (Willie), and uncle, James Lemley, Sr. (Shirley). Phillip attended Cleveland Public Schools where he graduated and received his high school diploma from John F. Kennedy High School in 1983. He attended The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH where he majored in Engineering. Phillip received Christ and was baptized at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Charles B. Cotton, Sr. He served faithfully as the Chairman of the Deacon Board, Vice-Chairman of the Trustee Board, an active member of the Laymen’s Committee of the Progressive Baptist Association, and taught Sunday School until his untimely death. Phillip had an excellent work ethic and took every task he had seriously. He was employed for 13 years at Receivable Management Services as a Collections Specialist and later moved up to Team Lead and Trainer. He enjoyed tinkering with electronics, going out to eat at Golden Corral, and was an avid Star Trek fan. Although Phillip had no children of his own, he helped to raise his sister’s children whom he referred to as his nieces and nephews. Phillip leaves to cherish his memories, two nephews, Montael Davis and Frederick Sims; two nieces, Sharanie Sims and Robin Sims all of Cleveland, OH; ten first cousins, Vicki Bryant (Nathaniel Ray) of Cleveland, OH, Veronica Jenkins (Mike) and Pamela Kindle (James) of Fremont, OH, Karen Lemley of Columbus, OH, James Lemley, Jr. (Patty) of Wooster, OH and Yvonne Jones, Gail White, Kenneth Sims, Belinda Sims, and Carl Barry all of whom preceded him in death; his long-time girlfriend, Sonja Banks, and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends. |
