Mattie Lue Smith aka Verne, was born to Ari L. Crayton and Clinton Crayton on November 8, 1956 , in Millers Ferry, Alabama.

She was the third of five siblings.

Mattie went to Wilcox County High School, and graduated in 1972 in Millers Ferry, Alabama. Mattie then left Alabama and went to Newport Kentucky, at “Job Corps” and that’s where she met her late husband, Harold W. Smith and they later got married in Amityville, New York. Mattie had two girls, Celestine Smith-Edwards and Shameka Smith. She lost two sons in birth prior to the birth of her daughters.

Mattie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and at an early age was baptized at her mothers and father’s church, New Hope Baptist Church in Millers Ferry, Alabama. Mattie was employed by Cleveland State University as a custodian workers until she went out on medical leave.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughters: Celestine L. Smith-Edwards (Miguel Edwards), Shameka C. Smith (Cortney Bell), god-son: Vincent Smith , grandchildren: Cortez B. Bell, Tod’Janae “Lue” Smith, Zarrion T. Mattice, sister: Celestine Draine (David Draine), brothers: Michael Mixon (Mary Bryant) David J. Mixon Sr., (Annette Moore Mixon), Harold Mixon (Domita Walls Mixon) and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Mattie will be truly missed by all.
